South Georgia - October 8th - November 12th 2009

A few months ago an opportunity arose very suddenly to grab a place on Pelagic Australis a 72ft expedition yatch which was making a trip to South Georgia later in the year.  An email from the boat's skipper to South Georgia Association members alerted us all to the availability of about 8 places. The boat was full within a week!

South Georgia is remote and mountainous with abundant wildlife particuallry on the coastal fringe as well as the surrounding ocean.  Uninhabited apart from two small research stations and a few government employees to supervise and administer the numerous tourist visitors.  It is an unspoilt wilderness with a fascinating heritage of exploitation of its wildlife (seals and whales) and is now environmentally vunerable.

From 1974 to 1977 I had spent three austral summers on Bird Island, a small island off the north-west end of South Georgia and had been looking for an opportunity to return.  A couple of years ago I'd visited South Georgia as a guest on board a large tourist ship to begin pushing forward the Troubled Waters project, but this trip on Pelagic Australis offered a completely different experience.  Besides, the project needed a substantial move forward and this trip would present wonderful creative opportunities.
